Salalah Eye Opens During Khareef 2026: A Self-Drive Guide

Visitors travelling to southern Oman during Khareef 2026 will soon have a new attraction to add to their Salalah itinerary. Salalah Eye, a 55-metre observation wheel overlooking Al Hafa Beach, is scheduled to begin official operations on 15 August 2026.

The attraction is located at the New Al Hafa Souq, placing it close to one of Salalah’s best-known shopping and cultural areas. According to information published ahead of the opening, its cabins can accommodate up to six passengers and offer elevated views across the Arabian Sea, Salalah’s coastline and the surrounding landscape.

Its launch comes during the busiest part of the Khareef season, when travellers from Oman and across the GCC visit Dhofar for its cooler weather, mist-covered mountains and seasonal greenery.

Why Salalah Eye Is a Timely Addition

Salalah already offers a distinctive mix of natural landscapes, cultural sites, beaches and traditional markets. Salalah Eye introduces a different type of experience: a panoramic city attraction that families, couples and small groups can include in an evening programme.

The location makes it particularly practical for visitors who want to combine sightseeing with shopping and dining. Instead of treating the attraction as a standalone stop, travellers can build a flexible half-day itinerary around Al Hafa.

Because the wheel overlooks the coast, the experience may vary depending on visibility and weather. Khareef mist is part of Salalah’s appeal, but it can sometimes reduce long-distance views. Visitors should therefore check local conditions and the attraction’s confirmed operating hours before setting out.

Planning a Self-Drive Visit to Al Hafa

Having a rental car gives visitors more control over the timing of their Salalah itinerary, especially during the busy August period. Travellers can avoid depending on multiple one-way journeys and can adjust their programme when weather, traffic or attraction schedules change.

A practical day could begin with a visit to one of Dhofar’s natural or cultural sites, followed by time at the hotel during the warmer or busier part of the afternoon. The evening can then be reserved for New Al Hafa Souq, Salalah Eye and dinner nearby.

Visitors should allow additional travel time during peak Khareef evenings. August traditionally attracts a significant share of the season’s visitors, so popular roads, shopping areas and family attractions may be busier than usual.

Parking arrangements at newly opened attractions can also change during their first weeks of operation. Follow on-site signs and avoid stopping in traffic lanes or informal roadside areas.

Choosing the Right Rental Car for Salalah

The most suitable vehicle depends on the number of passengers, luggage and the wider travel plan.

Sedan

A sedan is a practical choice for couples or small families whose itinerary mainly covers Salalah city, established coastal roads and major tourist attractions.

SUV

An SUV offers additional passenger and luggage space, making it useful for families, groups and travellers carrying equipment for a longer Khareef stay.

Four-wheel-drive vehicle

Some mountain routes and destinations in Oman require or benefit from an appropriate four-wheel-drive vehicle. However, renting a 4WD does not mean every off-road track is safe or permitted. Travellers should confirm the route, weather conditions and rental terms before leaving paved or established roads.

The vehicle should be selected for the entire itinerary, not only the drive to Salalah Eye. A car that is comfortable for a short city journey may not be the best option for a family planning several days of touring across Dhofar.

Driving During Khareef Conditions

Khareef weather can create mist, light rain, wet roads and sudden changes in visibility, particularly near hills and green mountain areas.

Drivers should reduce speed when visibility drops, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and avoid abrupt braking. Headlights should be used when necessary, and the vehicle’s tyres, brakes, cooling system and windscreen wipers should be checked before a long journey.

Crowded viewpoints require particular care. Never stop in an active traffic lane simply to take photographs, and do not drive onto soft ground without knowing whether the surface is stable.

For longer journeys, take regular breaks and monitor official weather and traffic information. Navigation applications are helpful, but they should not replace road signs or instructions from local authorities.

Book Early for Peak August Travel

Salalah Eye is scheduled to open in the middle of Dhofar’s highest-demand travel month. Rental vehicle availability may therefore tighten around weekends and the opening period.

Before confirming a booking, provide the rental company with the travel dates, passenger count, luggage quantity and planned destinations. This helps identify a vehicle that suits both city driving and the wider route.

Travellers should also confirm collection and return arrangements, insurance terms, mileage conditions and any restrictions that apply to mountain or off-road travel.

Salalah Eye adds a fresh viewpoint to the Khareef experience, but the real advantage of a self-drive trip is the freedom to connect it with the rest of Dhofar. Contact Mersad Car Rental & Tours to check suitable vehicle availability for your Oman itinerary.
